A demolition worker from Missoula County is fighting for his life after an industrial accident at the old Smurfit Stone Mill in Montana. The man was scrapping a tank at the mill on Tuesday evening when a 350-pound piece of metal fell on his chest. Once paramedics arrived at the scene, they were able to revive the man with a defibrillator before rushing him to the hospital, where he is currently in critical condition.
The owners of the Smurfit Stone Mill, Industrial Technology Company (ITC) and Green Investment Group, are recent buyers of the plant. They released a statement reporting that a full investigation of the accident is underway. The Illinois-based Green Investment Group hired contractors like ITC to work on the mill to ready the site for development as a hub for mixed-use green technology. ITC has not had any loss-time accidents in 15 years, and this incident was definitely unexpected.
