An explosion at a propane cylinder exchange this morning injured several individuals in Conroe, Texas. So far reports indicate that two people were emergency airlifted to receive medical treatment at a Houston hospital and five others were transported to nearby hospitals by way of ambulance. The propane cylinder exchange is operated by AmeriGas, the nation's top propane marketer.
The Montgomery County Fire Marshal's Office informed the general public that the situation was contained and under control, but fire crews and other emergency personnel remain on the scene. Initial investigations are already beginning to take place and are being conducted by Fire Marshal investigators as well as officials from the Texas Railroad Commission, because of their role in regulating the propane industry. Due to the recent nature of the incident, information is still thin.
A statement was obtained from an AmeriGas employee who was on the scene at the time of the incident this morning. The employee explained that workers were in the process of filling the propane tanks and stacking them. During this routine operation, someone at the scene stepped on a gas line which caused a leak. This leak was ignited by a spark.
As soon as the explosion occurred, one of the AmeriGas employees quickly turned off the gas line. Unfortunately, two of the workers were badly burned. These were the individuals that were airlifted to a Houston hospital for treatment. More information will likely be released as soon as it becomes available. It is avoidable accidents such as this that so commonly cause worker injury and death. This is not the first incident of its kind. AmeriGas Corporation has been the subject of civil suits and penalties before.
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards as well as Texas Railroad Commission standards exist in order to eliminate accidents such as this from occurring. While only partial details have been released, there seems to have been negligence or failed adherence to regulatory standards that contributed to this incident. In cases such as this, workers can take legal action.
By taking legal action, injured workers such as the AmeriGas workers could potentially recover compensation for their medical expenses, lost wages and noneconomic damages such as pain and suffering or loss of enjoyment of life. Arnold & Itkin LLP is proud to represent industrial workers that were injured by the negligent or careless actions of others.
