After 12 hours of searching for the missing person in the La Porte plant explosion this past Saturday, rescue crews finally discovered a body. This disaster resulted in the serious injury of one victim and the death of another, tragic news that is striking those who knew and loved the victims. La Porte Police Sgt. John Krueger claims that while there were between 15-20 employees on the Air Liquide plant at the time of the explosion, only the two workers suffered. Sgt. Kruger shares that the second man incurred severe injuries from the blast, though by the end of the day this past Saturday was able to talk and is on his way to recovery at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.
Sadly, 30 year old Javier Ortiz was not as fortunate and after 12 hours of continuous searching, the crews divorced his body in the rubble. Police noted that while they discovered him late Saturday night, they were unable to identify his body until later on. Mr. Ortiz was a chemist at the La Porte plant, as well as a beloved husband and father who were very involved in his community as well.
One of the big concerns with this explosion is the array of toxins that were released into his air including a mixture of nitrogen, oxygen and argon. At this point Air Liquide claims that they are one of the world's leading industries for gases, with over 200 locations all over the world. Plant explosions and other industrial accidents are very common in today's society, and with the industries ever growing, more and more victims are being injured and killed on a daily basis. The statistics for workplace deaths in the state of Texas is staggering. According to the
U.S. Department of Labor, in 2010 there were 456 fatal injuries caused by workplace accidents, with a nationwide number of 4,547.
