Cause of Pipe Accident in Karnes County Under Investigation

Posted By Arnold & Itkin || 25-Sep-2013

Injured Workers Will Reportedly Recover

As of Wednesday, September 25, 2013, the cause of the pipe burst in Karnes County is still under investigation. Investigators from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Railroad Commission of Texas arrived in Karnes County on Wednesday to examine the water pipe that burst on Tuesday morning. Six people were injured in the accident—four of which were airlifted to the burn unit at San Antonio Military Medical Center, while the other two were taken from the site (located west of Falls City, Texas) to nearby hospitals. Every worker who was injured in the accident is reportedly in stable condition and expected to survive.

Company that Owns the Rig Has Previous Work-Related Incident on Record

Three of workers involved in the accident work for Sprint Safety, which is a Houston-based company that focuses on efficiency. The other three workers are employed by Berry Bros, a general oil-field contractor. According to news reports, the oil rig belongs to Freeport McMoRan Oil & Gas. Freeport McMoRan Oil & Gas is an offshoot of Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold, which is one of the largest material companies in the world. The Texas Commission for Environmental Quality's records state that Freeport owns and operates 21 rigs in Karnes County. While many of these rigs have only started operating a few months ago, none of them have any violations.

Freeport does, however, own an Indonesian gold mine in Papua, according to a Freeport spokesman. He told the news that a tunnel in the mine collapsed in May of 2013, killing 28 workers. This caused the government in Indonesia to review the safety measures at every mine throughout the country. Freeport also reportedly held its own investigation and safety review following the accident prior to reopening the mine in June, 2013.
