Today, an explosion and a fire occurred in two separate incidents in the
Houston area. While causes for the fires are still unknown, local news
stations are providing live coverage for both incidents.
Northwest Houston Home Explosion
In northwest Houston, officials responded to a reported explosion that
left one victim, a man in his fifties, with second and third degree burns
on his arms and face. He was taken by LifeFlight to the hospital. Currently,
the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause
of the explosion.
ExxonMobil Plant Fire in Baytown
Near Houston’s ship channel in Baytown, the ExxonMobil plant burst
into flames. Live coverage provided images of massive flames and black,
billowing smoke on the scene. It has not yet been disclosed as to whether
anyone has been injured in this fire, nor what caused it.
ExxonMobil refineries have a history of explosions that have sent many to the hospital. Included
on Exxon’s 3,400-acre Baytown complex is the nation’s second
largest refinery and an expansive petrochemical plant.

On Saturday, April 9 at approximately 7:30 a.m., a person went inside the
Baytown ExxonMobil refinery without permission. In response, the refinery
spent most of the day in lockdown, with it only being lifted around 3:00
p.m. According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, K-9s were
deployed to the area, but no suspect was found. A spokesman for Exxon
Mobil stated that they “take matters of this nature very seriously
and are working with Baytown Police Department.” Company officials
have since reported that personnel of the refinery have resumed normal
