Updated: Fire & Explosion Reported in Houston Area

Posted By Arnold & Itkin || 7-Apr-2016

Today, an explosion and a fire occurred in two separate incidents in the Houston area. While causes for the fires are still unknown, local news stations are providing live coverage for both incidents.

Northwest Houston Home Explosion

In northwest Houston, officials responded to a reported explosion that left one victim, a man in his fifties, with second and third degree burns on his arms and face. He was taken by LifeFlight to the hospital. Currently, the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the explosion.

ExxonMobil Plant Fire in Baytown

Near Houston’s ship channel in Baytown, the ExxonMobil plant burst into flames. Live coverage provided images of massive flames and black, billowing smoke on the scene. It has not yet been disclosed as to whether anyone has been injured in this fire, nor what caused it. ExxonMobil refineries have a history of explosions that have sent many to the hospital. Included on Exxon’s 3,400-acre Baytown complex is the nation’s second largest refinery and an expansive petrochemical plant.

Updated April 9

On Saturday, April 9 at approximately 7:30 a.m., a person went inside the Baytown ExxonMobil refinery without permission. In response, the refinery spent most of the day in lockdown, with it only being lifted around 3:00 p.m. According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, K-9s were deployed to the area, but no suspect was found. A spokesman for Exxon Mobil stated that they “take matters of this nature very seriously and are working with Baytown Police Department.” Company officials have since reported that personnel of the refinery have resumed normal work activities.
