Flash Fire at Sunoco Logistics Injures Seven

Posted By Arnold & Itkin || 14-Aug-2016

On Friday, shortly before 9 p.m., a flash fire occurred at Sunoco Logistics’ terminal in Nederland, TX. Seven employees were injured during the fire—four of whom were injured critically. Three of the injured were transported via Life Flight to burn centers while four were taken to local hospital via ambulance.

The flash fire occurred while the welding contractor was working on a crude-oil pipeline connection that was under construction. In a statement from Sunoco, the company stated there was no impact to nearby residents and that they will be working with the contractor, L-Con, Inc., to determine the cause.

Federal accident investigators arrived at the scene on Saturday to begin investigating. "There was welding, a crude oil line and fumes," said a Sunoco spokesman. The investigation will look into what set off the fire, as well as whether or not the contractors were following necessary safety practices.

Sunoco Logistics transports, terminals, and stores crude oil, natural gas liquids, and refined products. The Nederland terminal stores such products and is connected to a 6,000-mile pipeline network.
