Fatal Water Treatment Plant Explosion Occurs in Midland

Posted By Arnold & Itkin || 5-Jan-2016

On Monday, January 4, at approximately 10:30 a.m., a water treatment plant just outside of Midland, TX exploded; according to county officials, the incident occurred when an employee was mixing chemicals. The blast and subsequent fire destroyed one building, two RVs, three other vehicles, and resulted in the death of one employee. No other injuries have since been reported.

In a press release from the county, they stated the following:

“Upon arrival, a structure was completely engulfed in flames. Once the flame was extinguished, personnel discovered the body of (the company employee) within the structure.”

Residents of the nearby area stated there was an initial explosion at the plant followed by subsequent smaller blasts, resulting in smoke that could be seen for miles. One resident described the incident as similar to (but louder than) the “boom of fireworks” followed by “a series of smaller ones.”

The Midland Fire Department, Northeast Fire Department, and Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department all responded and were able to extinguish the flames after just more than an hour. As they were battling the blaze, supervisors of the company (Water Rescue Services) were at the scene.

The building where the employee was mixing chemicals, and all of the contents within it, were destroyed in the incident, according to the Midland Fire Marshall. Although an odor could be smelled following the fire, it is not believed that the chemicals are toxic. The explosion is currently still under investigation, which will determine whether or not the incident was caused by safety violations.
